Martin Luther
In 1517, Martin Luther posted his now famous Ninety-Five Theses on the doors of a church. At this time, only clergy members, or leaders of the church, were taught to read. Martin Luther felt that this wasn't right, and that every one should be allowed the knowledge of how to read, so that they could read and decipher the Bible themselves. Luther can be credited as the man who began the education movement, sparking centuries of education reform. Also, Luther's actions should be credited with the beginning of private education. Once people were allowed to read the Bible themselves, many churches opened their own schools in a effort to preserve their beliefs with future generations.
